Opening Ebooks from within HTML document

Various folks (see http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...72#post2675172) including me, desire the feature that one can open a HTML file and click on a link to a local ebook file (e.g. an EPUB file) and have that ebook open properly. Simple, yes? But the HTML browser on the pocketbook 623 doesn't do that, it can't cope.

Neither can the enhanced Links browser (which I downloaded from the Russian forum, no don't ask me to give you the link I can't remember it). Oh, it can find and open the file, but it doesn't understand EPUB and doesn't open the file with an EPUB reader program; it tries to open the file itself and one gets garbage on the screen.

However, I've found a workaround!

:idea2:

It seems that if one opens the HTML file with fbreader, it DOES understand clicking on a local file AND opening it with the EPUB reader program. It's even clever enough to use whatever program one has set as the default EPUB reader, even when that default isn't fbreader itself.

Yes, it's a trade-off, because fbreader isn't really that great at displaying HTML files (for some reason, it splits them over multiple pages when it doesn't need to), but at least it does treat local links correctly. A compromise could be that you don't set fbreader as the default HTML reader, but use "open with" when you navigate to a HTML file which you know has local links in it that you want to use (such as a HTML catalogue of your books).

I thought some folks would be interested to know about this workaround.

Pocketbook 623 Touch Lux - Probleme bei Kälte

Hallo,

Danke

603 PDF reading

I read a lot of pdf files on my pocketbook touch lux. I prefer to read them in 'reflow', though, because it's easier on my eyes. However, I had some trouble with that. Every once in a while I cannot go to the next part of the page. It tries to load, but then it stays on the same part. Whenever I manually go to the next part and skip to the last part of the previous page, there are sentences missing.
Would there be any chance of fixing this problem? I'm a rookie, so maybe I missed a firmware update that fixes this? Or is there any other pdf reader that does this?
Thanks in advance!

PB302 vs PB632

I have an old PB302 - which is starting to age and fail on me. The USB port has started to fail - sometimes fails to read books in. Otherwise it is still going strong. I am surprised that the battery has lasted this long (but I have a spare).

I go camping a bit and I need a nightlight. So the Touch Lux model looks good.

I also read left handed a lot, so the fact that the PB302 has hardware buttons that I can reassign is a top feature. ie I assign both bottom buttons on the PB302 to 'Page Forward'. This means I can use either my left or right hand to read. Or I can swipe the screen. All very flexible.

I am looking at a new ereader with basically the same features. I note that the PB623 has hardware buttons - although not as good as the PB302. Can these be reassigned in the software? Alternatively, can it be used left-handed?

I am also looking at the Kobo Aura HD, but that uses an internal DB like Kindle, so that makes putting books on the thing a real pain. You have to setup Collections, etc using Calibre. The Kobo is pretty fast though, whereas the PB623 (like the PB302) seems very underpowered.

I just love the way Pocketbooks just read folder structures - not a DB. Well, at least the PB302 does - are the newer PB models the same?

I have found a seller in Australia, so that is good news. The PB623 is about the same price as the Kobo Aura HD, so these things are not cheap.

Your comments welcome....

I have used a Pocketbook 302 for years and loved it. But it is failing, so I thought I would buy the (hopefully) much improved latest model from Pocketbook.

I bought the PB 623 Touch Lux. It is ok, and I am happy enough with it, but if this is the direction Pocketbook is heading in, then I think they are making a big mistake. The 302 is a much better designed unit even than the 623.

They have taken all the good features in the PB302 and dropped them. Weird. The big edge the PB had over all the rest (Kindle, Kobo, etc) is that you could customize everything. Not so anymore. It is still better than the Kindle or Kobo, but a lot of the stuff is gone.

No bluetooth (not that I really care).

The physical buttons were great - and located perfectly. So what did they do - move them and basically delete 2 of them.

There are touch zones on the screen - which is good - but you cannot change them.

The status bar (in a book) - still one of the best ones around. But not as good as the one in the 302.

The CPU speed is still not really fast enough. It is ok - but now that we have 2Gig octo-cores - why use an 800MHz single core clunker? Perhaps more RAM is needed also. Bit disappointing.

The touch screen is not as good as the 302. I almost never got a false trigger on the 302. With the 623 you have to be fairly careful how you activate the touch triggers, especially the swipes. I am guessing that this is because of the newer capacitive screen, but the 302 was certainly better.

Price wise we are still looking at one of the most expensive ereaders around. It is certainly dearer (in Australia) than the Kobo Aura HD which I think is the nearest competitor.

Having used both the Kobo Aura and the PB623, I think the PB623 is the better unit. But the point of my little diatribe is that Pocketbook should have built on the PB302 and made a truly brilliant market leader. Unfortunately, they seem to have gone the other direction, trying to compete with mass market readers like the Kindle.

Anyway, the Pocketbooks are a joy to transfer books onto (folder based, yay!). Getting onto that now.

PB912 restarts itself

Hi, I purchased the Pocketbook 912 in October 2012, and it always worked properly. After a few months I upgraded the firmware to version 2.1.3 with no problems.
Now, from a few weeks, once in a while the device restarts itself, as if it were turned off and on. No warning, no message, no apparent reason.
Does anyone has ideas about the cause?
This behavior seems to happen more frequently day by day, and it's annoying. What can I do?
thanks

Is PocketBook 912 USB1 compatible?

The reason I'm asking this is that the Pocketbook 912 was never recognised by a HP Omnibook 6100 that only has USB1 ports. It runs WindowsXP, but so does another computer with USB2 ports where the 912 was recognised immediately. The old PowerPC Apple Mac iBook also recognised the 912 immediately, it has USB2 ports.

I had no problems copying files to a microSD card for the 912 using the USB1 ports.

Mystery or has anyone an explanation or solution?

902 Want page to stay "open" when the PocketBook 912 goes off to sleep

I've configured the PocketBook 912 to my liking turning off logos and so, but now it gets blank when off to sleep. I understood that the screen doesn't use more energy displaying an image rather than being blank, so I would like it to display the page that's open, but i see no option for having the book "open" when the 912 goes to sleep. Normal books don't close themselves when they're not being read, so why should the 912?

Someone may object that pocketbooks do just that, close themselves when being left alone, so it's normal that a PocketBook do as pocketbooks, but due to it's size the 912 can't really be considered a pocketbook.

Starttime Lux

Hello

The time it takes my Lux to be ready to read after a switch off is quite long (10 to 12 seconds). Are there any tweaks to speed-up the start routine?

I have the crystal-g theme installed, a custom start-screen logo, the current firmware (4.4) and some dozed books.

Thanks for your time&help

I just created a PocketBook Color Lux description in our wiki. Looks really nice with both color and a front light in an 8" device.

PocketBook CAD Reader

I have created a wiki page for the PocketBook CAD Reader. While it is not yet announced for eBook use I cannot imagine eReading not be offered on this device. This would make a great PDF reader with a 13.3" screen. Sony has also announced a unit with a 13.3" screen.

I also made other wiki pages on PocketBook devices.

Any way to change the size of the dictionary window ?

Hi,

I was just wondering if there would have any possibility to allow the small dictionary entry window to be the size of the entire screen. Such a small size is very annoying when there is a lot of text to read about the entry.

Thanks

Questions on the Pocketbook 626 / Touch Lux 2

Hi,

The default AdobeReader is neat and all, but I miss a few features I had in FBReader on my PRS-T1. Strangely, there is a FBReader config file in the config directory, but the app is not there.

Anyone has pointers on how to install FBReader on it ? (or on how to jailbreak it…)

2 dictionary questions for PB623

I really like my PB 623. One or two small niggles but more than compensated for by the good features. I have a couple of good dictionaries (Spanish-English) in mobi format which I bought for my Kindle. My questions are:
1. Can I use these dictionaries on the PB 623?
2. How do I upload them onto the PB 623.
I would be very appreciative of any help.
I speak English, German, French and Spanish pretty fluently. If you find it easier to answer in any of those languages, please do so.

PB622 : library reorg, access, etc

I have taken possession of the new toy, and have a couple of beginner questions:

1. The library has quite a few folders and/or books that do not interest me in the least. To save space and simplify things, can I simply delete them?

2. If I install a micro sd card, how will it be mounted by the system?

2. It seems that anyone can power on the device and have access to the whole contents, since no userid and pwd were required. In the pc world, being a Linux user, I was not a little surprised. Any hints?

Thanks in advance for help.

calibre book tagging in PB622

After having sent my calibre library to PB, I noticed that books tagged with more than one tag in calibre, only show up in PB Library with one tag (genre in PB terminology), the last one. Is this working as designed, or is there some trick enabling a book to be associated with more than one genre?

placing dictionaries

In the pb622 one can put dictionaries either on

/mnt/ext1/system/dictionaries (the main internal storage)
/mnt/ext2/system/dictionaries (an optional sd micro, usefull to test them)
/mnt/secure/dictionaries (an internal storage area)
anywhere, provided that you made a symlink from one of the previous three locations above

In each location, even with symlinks, they works well

If put in mnt/secure/dictionaries you can manage their availaibility via the system settings (like those from ABBYY)

On my PB, mnt/secure/dictionaries is 625mb of which 314mb are available (after I put there 70mb of my dictionaries)

It doesn't seem quicker to have dictionaries there

The only cons I can think of is the wearing (in terms of reading cycles) of the internal memory

anyone has any other pros/cons

:)
