Inkpad 3 - Is there a trick to make the light shine brighter?

The light on my Inkpad 3 Pro is considerable lower than the light my Kobos had. I crank the volume up to max and while reading I still try to make it brighter, only to find it is already on 100%.

Is there a trick to make it shine brighter? I searched the Internet for an answer and found out they make the Pocketbooks duller to save on battery. I don't need to save battery, I don't mind reloading it more often, I just want it to be brighter!

I'd really love if somebody knew if there is some tweak to the firmware that would do the trick! :)

Has anyone tried the new Inkpad X?

I am especially interested in how well it supports PDF reading.

Thanks

PocketBook TL3 (626) not starting

Hello fellow ebook readers, this is my first post here and already with a problem.

So TL;DR is that reader is not working properly, it lid up the screen upon pressing power button and it switch off when long-press power button. But only this, not displaying anything.

Longer version of problem is that it started last week with frozen screensaver (book cover). I tried to revive or switch off but nothing worked. I found on YT instruction how to reset device https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYZkDtq2KQQ and tried it. Well it kind of worked but only got home screen and still not being able to do anything (no touch, no buttons, no switch off). Then after numerous tries it went to current state when only display switch on or off. Contacted service, they send latest firmware but I don't even know if device is recognising card since not showing anything on display.

I was wondering if I could try clone boot card but it doesn't make sense since sd card is visible on Windows and I can copy test file to both partitions.

Please let me know if it is something else to try, I already bought new one (TL4 627) but would like to revive this one too.:help:

PB62x/740: root + sshd, ftpd, smbd, iptables, usbnet (needs testers)

This tutorial & tools is meant for power users who can make use of configuring the device in fancy ways, such as running custom stuff for linux, or advanced mods to the GUI. As of v2, the package does
  • install public su binary
  • install iptables binary, and script to load firewall rules on startup
  • install ssh, smb, ftp services and launch those at boot
  • permanetly enable usbnet (even when mass storage is on, usbnet runs alongside)
  • runtime patch out the worst of wifi glitches of stock firmware (arbitrary disconnects)

Devices supported

I have PB740-2 (InkPad 3 Pro), so that's pretty much the only one I can vouch for. Essentially if your firmware latest version is something like 5.20.xxxx, *it should run* (these images are all nearly identical). However I have no way to verify that for a fact. You might want to start slowly only with jailbreak su and nothing else on older devices, as bugs in older kernels can introduce nasty boot crashes, especially when configuring for combined usbnet. Chances are that for older devices significant tweaks to service scripts will be necessary.

How to install

Extract the 3 app files from pbjb*.zip release on github into applications folder of your device.

Then from app menu:

* Launch @Jailbreak. If it succeeds, it will install su binary and reboot the device. If it silently exits, chances are the exploit doesn't run on your firmware. After reboot finishes,
* Launch @Services. This will install the service files and start scripts.

Once the device boots after @Services install, you can ssh into root@169.254.0.1 with connected usbnet and look around. The root password is randomly generated, stored in 'password.txt' document the install process generated. If you want it changed, simply edit that file and reboot again for services to take note. All other services (smbd, ftpd) expect the same username=root and password.txt pair.

Samba share

Spoiler:

For frequent use of the device's storage from a PC, its useful to map the share permanently as:

Code:

net use p: \\169.254.0.1\uext1
And use that network drive instead of using the usual USB mass storage. The reason for doing this is that you can now set the device to 'charge only' mode when plugging to USB, and keep reading a book while files are copied.

The full list of the shares when you navigate to \\169.254.0.1 is:

ext1 - main storage (wifi & usbnet), passworded
ext2 - sd storage (wifi & usbnet), passworded
ext3 - sd2 storage (wdifi & usbnet), passworded
uext1,uext2,uext3 same as above, works ONLY via USBNet, no password
public - see below (wifi & usbnet), read only, no password

Finally, theres a hidden 'system' share exposing root of the filesystem tree. Use only if you know what that means. Most of it is mounted read only by default, so you need to ssh in anyway (perhaps to fix wrong permissions introduced by samba as well).

Password-less access for guests

Guest samba (\\ip\public) and anonymous ftp land the visitor in 'public' folder you can create on the main storage. By pulling documents in there you can share stuff with random strangers/devices you don't trust on the LAN.

Troubleshoot
Spoiler:

Huh, I click explore network neighborhood and it shows no shares?

Network discovery doesn't always work well over wifi (AP blocks broadcasts between clients). You can ssh root@169.254.0.1 via USBNet and see via ifconfig in any event. or check listing on your wifi router, or click Network Information in koreader...

I'm bricked, network/usb storage fails completely now...

It's absolutely crucial to keep '@Uninstall' package around - for if something goes horribly wrong, network or storage access can become completely cut off. Running this package will undo everything of the jailbreak and the network services, restoring the device to the way it was.

If stuff breaks to a point not even launching any app is viable (ie frozen screen), there's a boot escape hatch: Keep rapidly pressing *any* button all the while during startup. The boot script does a tally of press events, and if count is more than 5 times over a specific window of time, the services scripts will not start at all. This way you should get functioning system again assuming it was a service script causing trouble.

Low level internals

Spoiler:

Everything of above is stored on the /mnt/secure partition - this one is ext2, and mostly left alone by firmware updates, meaning the JB has a high chance of survival across OTAs. As far as jailbreaks go, this one is fairly conservative one - it doesn't modify *any* files of currently installed fw, it simply places itself in a directory the stock firmware auto-executes stuff from (/mnt/secure/runonce). This minimizes chances of conflict with future OTA updates.

I just want the jailbreak, not all this fancy stuff...

Good! That's why its split into two packages. If you run only @Jailbreak, you can get rudimentary root ssh, specifically:

* Start ssh in koreader
* log in with ssh reader@ip -p 2222 /bin/sh, you'll get dumb terminal
* run /mnt/secure/su /sbin/dropbear -G "" in it

At this point, built-in root sshd with no password is running and has a working terminal. Using the jailbreak standalone this way is much safer as all it does is just drop single file and doesn't fiddle with the running firmware. It doesn't protect itself to survive OTAs though, so it will stop working the moment some "good samaritan" ruins it.

Pocketbook dictionary format revisted

I spend yesterday trying to guess to restrictions of the pocketbooks dictionary converter.exe* to get the whole of the Oxford Dictionary 2nd Edition into dic-format. Oxford dictionary has entries up to 115k characters, so it not odd converter.exe crashes, just irritating. Duden (de-de) en Oxford Learners Dictionary 8th Ed. (en-en) work with a little tweaking of the xdxf-files.**

Wish I had a clue of that format so I could skip the program converter.exe: The Perl script already runs up to 250 lines!
Does anyone have or know a link to the source code of converter.exe? Does anyone know the format of pocketbook's dic-format, so I can generate it straight from xdxf- or cvs-format?

The restrictions known of converter.exe are
  1. A line should not be >4096 bytes. It cuts the line after this length and messages that the XML is missing closing tags.
  2. If '&' or '>' are found in the XML content outside of tags, etc., it quits and messages about malformed XML.
  3. If an dictionary entry, a block enclosed by <ar> and </ar> tags exceeds roughly 57k chars it crashes without messaging.***

Possible resolutions are:
  1. Split the dictionary entry at the tags or use something like prettify, auto-ident.
  2. '&' and '<' should be replaced with '&amp' and '&lt'.
  3. I went to bed before I could resolve this. Hopefully, I can resolve this by splitting an entry in multiple entries with identical or slightly different lemma's.

If someone has tinkered with this before and has pointers for me, I would be much obliged.

* I used DictionaryConverter-neu 171109. Search this forum or look here for more info.
** For the conversion of dictionaries to xdxf-format I used linguae. Search this forum or look here for more info.
*** This is different from @Rkomar's post that states that he converted a dictionary with 33283 lines. It seems to be the limit on one dictionary entry.

Understandability Text-to-speech

With the new pocketbook Inkpad 3 Pro, I finally tried TTS again. The Bluetooth connects directly to my hearing aids, so I have a clear and loud sound. I tried Kendra(US) and Amy(UK).

However, I have trouble understanding the text-to-speech if I don't concentrate fully on it. And I mean concentrate well beyond the concentration needed for writing this post or reading a book. I can't do simple jobs without losing large parts of the sentences. Talking it over I heard my mother had similar issues with TTS.
Did anyone else experience this?

Now part of it is of course learning, exposure and it will get easier with time. However, I already found Amy easier to follow than Kendra. Could voices be suggested for better understandability?

Inkpad 3 Pro: How do I get an url in the store?

I would like to couple the store browser to my server where I am hosting my library with quickserve*. I would like to surf to my local net ip http://10.0.0.1:9672 .

However, it can't be found by Google, nor can I manually add a bookmark to go to it. Are there workarounds? Because it sounds very convenient to have a store in my Pocketbook that is my own library.

(Of course when I am elsewhere, I can link the WiFi of the Pocketbook to my mobile, which forwards 10.0.0.1:9672 over the OpenVPN link.)

*Probably have to get a little http server running, but it works like a charm.

Language folder for Greek dictionary

Now that the conversion of dictionaries is made more smooth with a patched converter.exe and the perl script pocketbookdic.pl, I would love to enhance the Ancient Greek dictionary of Liddell-Scott-Jones.

At the conversion the format allows to specify which letters are to be treated as equal in collates.txt, how the keyboard should be to input the words in keyboard.txt and what word-endings are to be seen as belonging to the same word in morphems.txt.

I remember stripping all diacriticals from the source to get it through the Stardict engine. The fuzzy logic from sdcv (the command line version of Stardict patched further by the Koreader team) took it from there. However, now we could create a _better_ dictionary, if we would be able to prepare collates.txt and morphems.txt!

Now, I know that in 2012-2015 some people have made these files for Greek and they would be a great starting point. Would anyone still have those files on some dusty harddisk somewhere?

I've attached the original csv-file and the converted ones.
(If you get all kinds of strange symbols: Reload the file with UTF-8 encoding.)

POCKETBOOK INKPAD 3 PB740 touchscreen not working after firmware update

Hello, I have a brand new POCKETBOOK INKPAD 3 PB740. It was working fine when I first switched it on, the battery was full, I connected it to the PC and uploaded some books. And then I had a prompt to update to the newest firmware, so I downloaded it via WiFi and then started the update.

The problem is though that after it finished, on switching on the device, the touchscreen in not working at all. I read about the new feature to activate/deactivate the touch function, and tried double clicking the menu button, but it doesn't help. Moreover, this function should reset ro working touchscreen after turning the power off and on.

The device seems to react to buttons pressing - the on/off button, the light when I press the menu button, the forward and backward button, the home button brings up Task Manager, but I cannot enter anywhere.

I cannot make a factory reset, as when I connect it to the PC it goes to battery charging.

Any suggestions?

Quirky power on behaviour Inkpad Pro 3

Normally, one press of the power button turns the e-reader on. However, when it has been unused for a few hours, turning it on becomes harder at times: Double press, pressing the power button with the page forward button or with the menu button. When all that doesn't work, I plug in the USB cable and repeat: Succesfully. Odd bit is that the battery is still at 76%.

Anybody, has any idea what is happening and how I can resolve it?

Any RemoteInk users able to assist?

I have a PocketBook InkPad 3, which I'm hoping will be compatible with RemoteInk. Planning to run it off a Raspberry Pi 2.

I've downloaded the .zip from Github, however reading the installation instructions I'm already starting to get confused.

https://github.com/borzunov/remoteink

I have a little experience of using CLI, but if things get any more complicated than following a list of instructions, I start to despair.

What for example am i supposed to do about this?:

"Update: Since the version of Pocketbook Pro SDK by Sergei Vlasov is not available for download anymore, you may want to use the official Pocketbook Pro SDK. @calcreg has posted instructions on how to run the client inside an emulator from this version of the SDK on a Linux desktop."

Presumably I need both server and client installed for it to work?

If anyone can lend a helping hand, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks in advance

RemoteInk x InkPad 3 x USB?

I've bought an InkPad 3, mainly because I want to use it with RemoteInk (plugged into a Raspberry Pi).

However, I want to do this without wifi - rather, via USB, as I'm sensitive to wifi signals.

Is there any way of doing this? I've since discovered that I can't make it work as instructed on Github, as the InkPad 3 doesn't have USB Networking, as previous models did...

Would be mighty grateful for some help with this.

PockeTor - Tor browser on Pocketbook (FW5+)

Works only on modern PB gens (FW5). Unpack PockeTor-v*.zip from github into applications/ on main storage, and run @Pocketor app. Once bootstrap says is 100% done, you can type in url/select bookmark.

People behind fascist firewalls that block standard Tor entry guards may need to get a bridge and put it into torrc. Only classic bridges, domain fronting etc bridges won't work, as there's no helper for that.

Touch HD 3 missing audio/TTS functions (CIS)

$

Hello everyone. I'm new here, and to forums in general, so please forgive me if this question has been asked before. I tried using the search function but didn't seem to find much.

I bought my Pocketbook Touch HD 3 on the premise that it can play audio via bluetooth, as well as do TTS. It was written all over their website, and the shop assured it can do that, as did Youtube reviews.

However, my device doesn't seem to have any of these functions. TTS, Audio Player (and mp3 support to begin with) and bluetooth settings are all missing.
What's odd is that when I installed a TTS pack, it opened Voice Synthesis settings for me, but they're nowhere to be found otherwise.

I suspect it's a localisation issue.

Software version is: U632.5.19.832
Localization: CIS

Could it be that merely because I bought this device in Russia, it's missing all of these functions, even though I installed the software update from the US website?

Is there any way to restore full functionality to my PB632 device?

Please help. This device was an important gift to me and realising that it's stripped of its advertised functions is really underwhelming. Thank you.

Inkpad X

I am interested to know more about the PDF reading experience on the Inkpad X before deciding to purchase. I have tried Kobo, Onyx, Kindle (none satisfactory for various reasons - especially the Onyx which was a serious disappointment).

I am familiar with Pocketbook software (own a Touch Lux) but really need a device to read PDFs at something like full size. Not too interested in tech specs just the reader experience. I understand the device is not zippy but not bothered about that. I just want to know if the device does the job for reading.

Is the 10.3 screen adequate for the fixed size of a PDF? Do PDFs fit the screen well enough for reading with minimal zooming/panning? I don't need note taking but text markup is v useful (but I believe the standard Pocketbook tools work as usual). Does the X have any new PDF features I might not have heard about?

I am aware that the device is overpriced (by a long way!) but if it does the job I am happy to pay up.

My use case: I get a lot of PDF documents alongside epubs, mobis etc. (I am a reviewer) and find reading PDFs on on a normal tablet with Acrobat very tedious. Acrobat also has its own workspace which adds extra complexity when it comes to file management.

If anyone has one of these devices and uses it for PDF reading (as well as other formats of course) I would be very grateful to hear about it.

Thanks

Pocketbook 740 (3) - Unable to sync up books

$

Something odd happens with the device since the purchase day.
1. Dropbox.
After first setup it only allowed me to sync up books once or twice, all the following attempts returned a sync failed error message.
Now when I reset the device, it freezes at Dropbox authorization page and finally returns Authorization timeout error... each time. WTF?

2. Send-To-PocketBook.
I sucessfully setup account within pbsync.com domain (using PC) but now when I send books there, from my gmail account, they never sync with device (FB2 file, 1 MB as an example). Once I select Sync on device - it shows the Send-To-PocketBook process and that is it. No progress bar nothing. If you wait for a while and then click to check destination folder - it is empty. WTF?

I did not find ANY support etc community to ask for advice. Does anyone experience such issues or know how to fix them?

So the only reliable way to sync books is by wire.. until the wire refuses to transfer data, hah.

One interesting tip: clicking rightmost button 4 times disables/enables touch screen.
