Pocketbook dictionaries

Hello all,

I was looking for a more comprehensive/actual dictionary than the 1913 Webster's dictionary and found out that there isn't much for the Pocketbook. I can find with some ease dictionaries for the Kobo (understandable since the Kobo is more popular) but i find myself somewhat frustrated by this ".dic" format.

So, the point of this thread, do you guys have any sources for eng-eng dictionary for the pocketbook?

Here is what I found so far:

On the Pocketbook website, there is the 1913 Webster's, the "Dahl doctionary" and a few other lang-lang dictionaries. The 1913 Webster's is pre-installed and I was not able to make the Dahl work on my Pocketbook.

User SIRSteiner, many moons ago, made an excellent work compiling Wiktionary entries and the Webster's 1913 entries to make his own "RS dictionary" : see this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=190769

I found a bunch of Kobo dictionaries, as I said, but I find the converter (found on the Pocketbook website) very difficult to use (granted I didn't try much) and the input format is not the Kobo format anyway.

Pocketbook (Color) settings different books

Coming from Kobo I am used to find settings (e.g. font size) memorized for each book separately. My Pocketbook Color uses the latest setting for every book I open (which is not very practical, as I use some of the less interesting books for falling asleep with my glasses off => much bigger font. Am I missing something or is the PB software insufficiently sophisticated for remembering settings per book?

Not really happy.
- jump back number of pages when reopening book
- does not remember settings for books (but always applies the settings from tha last book)
- Dropbox sync doesn't work
- slowwwww
- colors are not convincing

Sorry PB, I think competition Clara is half price/better reader. You should upgrade your software significantly.

Audio adapter for PocketBook HD 3

I use this reader paired with an external speaker via Bluetooth and it works fine.
Now I also want to use it with wired headphones and I am surprised not to find an adapter offered by PocketBook. Maybe it should not be that surprising as I neither see a case for HD 3 on their website, which is really weird (https://www.pocketbook-int.com/fr/accessories).
Anyway, I wonder if there any particular adapters you recommend? I found one on Amazon, but then in comments some people complain it does not always work, not with all devices. Which I don't understand, by the way, protocols and standards seem clear, if they are implemented in a device, then any cable should do.
In any case, it would be great to know your experiences and recommendations.

pocketbook 840 read only problem questions

I have read many topics about sd micro card not working, cloning, etc.
But i have some questions. I have a pocketbook 840 that works, but does not remember the page of the book. So this must a problem of the internal SD card.
I tried to repair the SD with some linux commands i found. that did not work.
I wonder if i use dd or any other tool to get an image, is this image any good?
Is the problem solely the SD card? Or is the image not good?
What i mean : if i go through the whole process, is the image i use any good?
Or do i need some new image?

And if the image is ok to use, could i format the sd card, and then rewrite the image? what exactly is the read problem? is this a hardware failure?

Then i also wonder if i clone the sd, why must i change the size with hex editor? will the clone not make a 16 GB card 4 GB again?

hope some expert can help me. anyway, thanks for reading!

should I buy InkPad X?

Hi,

I'm trying to decide what to buy (or not), I have an iPad pro 11", I have the original Sony 13", I like reading with e-paper but I do also enjoy my iPad (I set it on dark mode when I read)

The thing that bother me with Sony after years of usage is no easy way to crop/zoom the content and no front-light, so I'm thinking of buying a new 10" reader with a front light, does it worth it? I don't want to use it as a note taker, I want to read PDFs and web pages, which one should I get
  • PocketBook InkPad X
  • Onyx Boox Note 2

the onyx note is 100 USD more, and I was wondering if it worth it.

Also, I like to ready in inverted mode (maybe a habit from iPad), does InkPad X reader do that?

which KOreader has chances on PB631?

Motivated by this post, I had a new go on KOreader. I tried both the "stable" version mentioned there and the most recent 2020.8.1 from https://github.com/koreader/koreader/releases.
I have to say that coming from "just" cr3, I'm impressed. For one, Koreader is the only one handling correctly mixed LTR-RTL text, which not even the stock pbreader does.
However neither of the two versions I have tried holds. I've found uncountable ways for crashing the program, by turning just a few pages, by entering the settings menus, by sketching some gesture on the touchscreen (not even knowing what their effect should be - never got that far in the settings).

Unless that is really a feature for reminding me that no single book deserves more than a cursive attention to a couple of its pages, and to stay away from the vane and addicting illusion of fine-tuning the configuration, has someone had better experiences than mine? Is KR demanding too much from the resources of PB631?

If I log in with ssh, I for example see with top that the process

is taking 407Mb, 87% of VSZ on a particular medium sized epub, though I have still 157Mb free. Too much for headroom?

Pocketbook Color -- My First Reactions

Well, I now have a PB Color and have used it for two days, thought I would share my reaction here. And, maybe get some help with a question or two from the PB Color "old-timers."

First, I purchased it from Newegg. I was a little concerned with various complaints by Googling Newegg. But it seemed to me that if they really had it in stock most of the complaints were about how Newegg may not police their third-party sellers/shippers as does Amazon. In this case Newegg would be the shipper. Anyway, I rolled the dice and 'lo the PB Color arrived within five days of the order.

I immediately loaded up a few comics as they were the main reason I purchased the device. I wanted an ereader that does color so as to be able to read the comics in bright sunlight. At first, I was far, far less than impressed by the color. It did seem to be very low in saturation and was not at all like a printed page of color would look. However, the human eye is adaptable and after an hour or so I found the color to be more than acceptable. And, wow, it certainly beats black and white on a regular ereader. IMHO anyway.

My main problems with it so far have been how it handles collections and (probably) my own fat-headedness in understanding how the heck the Pocketbook Cloud is supposed to work.

As mentioned here it seems that you cannot choose more than one book at a time to add to a collection. That is just stupid. What I finally did was to side load the comics I wanted to carry into folders within their own COMICS folder. Then I can use the library function of viewing by folder and see the comic groupings I like. OK this was when I noticed the weird effects of syncing to the PB Cloud.

What would happen is when I read a comic it would then sync to the cloud. But it would sync so that on the cloud it was no longer with a cover graphic. Worse, once it had sync'd to the Cloud the listing of that comic in my PBC's folder view would then carry a cloud icon and rather than quickly loading from the actual copy of the comic in the folder it would download that comic from the cloud!

After some thought I realized there was actually not a reason in the world I could think of for me to use the Pocketbook Cloud. I have no other PB devices and would never use the PB app on my iPhone or my iPad instead of the far, far, far, far better Comic Zeal program So I turned off Cloud sync and even logged out of the Cloud. Now it all works as I had hoped but I cannot help wondering if I maybe should have not done it this way?

Anyway, there were a few other surprises. One was the many books included in non-English languages. First I was erasing them one by one but then I usb-mounted the divide and saw there were simply folders of various languages so I deleted all but the English folder. Very quick that way!

Then there are the "adjustments" in the settings view. What they do is anyone's guess. The contrast one is about the only one I am sure what it does. And it simply has very invisible to regular look and no real way to vary from, say, good to better. None of the adjustments are mentioned at all in the manual.

What the manual does talk about a LOT is the Frontlight and the Smartlight. This would be cool except as far as I can tell there is no Smartlight on the unit! The Frontlight is the brightness. The Smartlight according to the manual controls the color temperature. But, no, there is not a Smartlight I can find. The manual shows two swipe adjustments. But on my unit BOTH the swipe adjustments work for only simple brightness and not at all as the manual shows. Frustrating but, on the other hand, I really was not expecting anything but the frontlight anyway.

So, overall, this is what I expected. A revolutionary first-iteration of technology that will no doubt look pretty darn primitive in a year or so. But, for now, I am having un and do not regret purchasing.

Pocketbook Touch Lux 5: Problem turning pages +/-10 and links

Hello.

I have a problem with my Pocketbook Touch Lux 5. When I hold the forward or backward button in order to move +/- 10 pages, the screen goes to the previous display (e.g. library) after taking my finger from the button. Note that the buttons are set for this function.

The same problem happens when I pull the slider to turn pages or when I input the digits of needed page or when I press a link or a bookmark.

Is it a problem of the firmware? I have installed the newest.
Have anybody else the same problem?

InkPad 3 Pro broken screen

Hey all,

I've gotten PB InkPad 3 pro as a birthday gift this May, have used it without any problems until this August, haven't been using it since because of work etc. It has been stored in a drawer in the case supplied with the PB when I wasn't using it.

I felt like reading again today, so I took my PB, started it up, and found out the screen in a state visible in the image attached. Tried turning it off and on again many times, tried charging it, nothing works.

Anyone encountered this? Is there some way to fix this? I've always treated the device with care, it never fell on the floor or anything, so I cannot believe that the screen broke out of the blue...

Will I lose notes synchronization?

I'm currently on Paperwhite 3 where I appreciate two features:
  • easy wireless upload to the device;
  • notes synchronization between devices.
Do Pocketbook devices offer that possibility? I heard wireless uploads are an option, but what about notes synchronization?

KOREADER view actual page as bootlogo?

Newer Pocketbook firmwares have this option:

which shows the actual page during the boot process.
The inbuild reader and even the old Coolreader are supported but I couldn't find an option in KOREADER to show it. I actually like this feature since it makes waiting for the device to bootup much shorter.
Does anyone know how to enable it or is KOREADER not able to do this?

Questions about my PB HD3

Been using my HD3 for about three weeks now, really nice device, loving the synchronization between my devices, battery, light, and resolution are excellent, haven't tested the audiobooks yet, I even loaded some Mangas and the comic Bone just to see how it managed them, and I'm pretty impressed, they look really good! I have some questions regarding somethings that I don't know if they can be fixed

The device tells me I have 1 notification, which I don't see when looking at them, so I don't know how to remove that icon on the Taskbar above.

Whenever I return to my reading book, it opens on the page I was on, but a sec later it loads a previous page, usually like 2 pages back.

The mobile app constantly tells me to relogin to my cloud account (daily) is this normal?

I'm using Calibre to load my books, the cover size is wierd, if I make the cover the same ratio as the reader screen, it looks great on the turned off screen, but on the menus there are some white or black bands to fill the image slot, and viceversa, if I make a cover a size to fit on the menus, the turned off screen has vertical white or black bands, I find that really annoying lol

I figured how to refresh covers displayed on the device by erasing the cache, but some covers don't show up at all? I can see the covers when I'm using Pocketbook on my phone, but they don't show on the device that's wierd.

Here are some pictures of my Pocketbook Touch HD 3 after I took them out of my bag this morning. There wasn't anything sharp or heavy that could damage it, and I can't seem to be able to do anything besides turning the frontlight on and off by holding the button to the farthest right. Please help if you have an idea of how to fix it. Sorry, I had to put the pics in a zip file cuz they were too large.

Currently porting the SGT Puzzle collection, need some coding help

Hi,

I bought a Pocketbook Touch HD 3 start of this year, and I used the covid lockdown to look into the PocketBook SDK, and ported the open source "Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle collection" to my device.

By looking at several code repositories with other PocketBook apps that I found at GitHub and elsewhere, I made some quite good progress and am now at a stage where it is turning into a serious and usable app:

(MIT License, so completely open source and free, no commercial interest at all, just personal enthusiasm)

To further progress with developing the app, I have some questions:

- Is there anything comparable to Menus and Dialogs in the SDK for Buttons? So far I low-level coded buttons by drawing bitmaps, catching screen tap events and checking if the x/y coordinates are within the button bitmap.

- I'd like to switch the game chooser screen to a scrolled area, similiar to the book browser library. There are functions like `AddScrolledArea` in `inkview.h`, but I'm unsure how to use this exactly. Is there example code somewhere?

- There is a special type of menu (for example when long-tapping a book in the home screen) that opens with some kind of 'arrow' pointing to the tapped object. What object in the SDK is this?

- One big element that is still missing in my app is individual configuration of game parameters. There is something like `ConfigEditor` in the SDK, but I'm completely unsure if I can use this, or if I need to low-code manual configuration.

Would be really great if somebody could help me out, thanks a lot for answers!

Hello there,

I have scoured the entire internet to find even one .dic file of an dutch dictionary (not eng>NL, but an full dictionary), but I haven't been able to find one. Can you guys please provide me with a dutch dictionary in .dic format? I use a Pocketbook 627 (Touch Lux 4).
